The year is 1997 and Prof. John Robinson (Guy Williams) and family have been launched into the cosmos aboard The Jupiter 2. As volunteers in America's efforts to colonize deep space, the family is underway on a five-and-a-half year mission to an earthlike planet. However, foreign spy and saboteur Dr. Zachary Smith (Jonathan Harris) manages to throw the ship off course while becoming stuck aboard the out-of-control vessel himself. Robinson's crew—along with would-be evildoer Smith—brave the trials and tribulations of their accidental adventures throughout the galaxy.

The robot cost $75,000 to produce and weighed in excess of 200 pounds. Two of them were made for the series. The robot's chest lights and motorized feelers were powered by an electrical cord which can occasionally be spotted. In some scenes where the Robot is seen in close-up, only the top of the robot is worn by the actor.
